NPSA Alert – March 2011
NPSA/2011/PSA002
A deadline of the 12th September 2011 means that purchasing policies are to be revised and old stock systematically removed to ensure all nasogastric tubes used for the purpose of feeding are radio-opaque throughout their length and have externally visible length markings.
The Merck Serono Corflo range of Fine Bore Feeding Tubes adhere to this alert as they are:
Completely radio opaque (20% barium sulphate throughout length of tube, 40% at the tip)
Regular centimetre markings
Labelled “ENTERAL”
Single patient repeated use
Colour coded ports
NOT compatible with IV syringes
Polyurethane
Purchasing policies should also be revised and old stock systematically removed to ensure all pH paper is CE marked and intended by the manufacturer to test human gastric aspirate. Merck Serono pH indicator strips are CE marked and intended to test human gastric aspirate. They have 0.5 increments and come in two versions; 0-6 and 2-9.
Staff training, competency frameworks and supervision are reviewed to ensure that all healthcare professionals involved with nasogastric tube position checks have been assessed as competent. Competency training should include theoretical and practical learning. An example eModule training tool for x-ray interpretation of nasogastric tube position is available at
www.trainingngt.co.ukThe Merck Gastroenterology product range contains a wide variety of products aimed at helping you satisfy the needs of your patients where enteral feeding is required. As well as our impressive range, we also supply these products in a large variety of different lengths and sizes so that you have the right product in the right size to support your choice of treatment for the patient.
The designs of the products are based upon customer and patient needs, and are further developed in response to these changing demands. Development is also based on the changing guidance of NICE and feedback from such national bodies as BAPEN and the NNNG.
In March 2007, The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), issued a patient safety alert (No19), aimed at promoting safer measurement and administration of liquid medicines via oral and other enteral routes. Since then, and following advice from our customers, we have redesigned our enteral feeding devices to give you peace of mind by ensuring NPSA compliance across the full range and thus reducing the risk of wrong route errors.
All of our Fine Bore Feeding Tubes are labelled as Single Patient Use devices. This means that the tubes can be re-passed on the same patient provided that the tube to be re-passed has maintained its functionality and integrity.
Furthermore, all our devices are both DEHP- and latex-free and manufactured in a latex-free environment. We also recognise the importance and value of training, education and support within gastroenterology and, as part of our continued commitment to our customers, we offer a wide range of services from tailor-made training packages to patient advice materials.
