Colorectal (Bowel) Cancer

Cancer comes second to cardiovascular diseases with regard to leading causes of death in the developed world. Despite advances in screening, education and early diagnosis, the global cancer burden continues to rise. This trend is set to continue due to an increasing shift towards an aging population with a high cancer risk.
Colorectal cancers initially develop in either the colon or rectum.  Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, with approximately 36,000 new cases diagnosed per year.  It is the second most common cause of death from cancer in the UK with nearly 16,000 deaths per year.
A high intake of red meat may increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer whereas a diet rich in fibre may reduce the risk.
Symptoms can include blood in the stool, narrower stools, a change in bowel habits and general stomach discomfort.
